Understanding the World – Mini Beast Hunt
Today we went on a cold, frosty mini-beast hunt! The ground was sparkling with ice, and we talked about how the weather is changing and how the temperature drops when it gets colder. The children learned that when it gets really cold, things like grass and water can freeze.
We also spoke about how some animals go into hibernation, which means they have a long, cosy sleep during the winter to keep safe and warm.
Outside, we carefully lifted up the grass beams and found lots of mini-beasts hiding underneath. They were tucked away where it was warm and safe. The children noticed that the grass under the beams felt soft and not frosty, but the grass that wasn’t covered was cold and crunchy with frost.
The children showed great curiosity as they explored, compared the different grasses, and talked about how animals keep themselves safe in winter. This helped them learn more about the seasonal changes and the world around them.
We can identify the offspring of animals
Our Pumpkin Soup Adventure!
What an exciting morning we had in Reception – we made our very own Pumpkin Soup!
The children were brilliant little chefs, using their cutting skills to carefully chop up the big, orange pumpkin. There were lots of “oohs” and “wows” when we opened it up and saw the stringy insides and slippery seeds! We used our senses to feel, smell, and look closely at what was inside it was messy, gooey fun!
We talked about all the ingredients we needed to make the soup and followed the steps together like real cooks. Then we read the story Pumpkin Soup and joined in with the characters’ adventure just like them, we worked as a team to make something delicious.
The classroom was filled with excitement as the soup cooked it smelled amazing! At snack time, every child had a taste in their own little cup.
What a lovely way to explore autumn, try something new, and build our cutting, talking, and teamwork skills.
The Gingerbread Man
As part of our Literacy programme, the children in Reception have been reading The Gingerbread Man. Inspired by the story, the class discussed the ingredients needed to make their own gingerbread. The children worked together to weigh and mix the ingredients carefully, creating the perfect dough. The highlight of the day came during snack time, when everyone enjoyed a delicious treat — their very own freshly baked gingerbread creations!
We dissected and labelled flowers as part of our science lesson
Year 2 enjoyed exploring and making observations about microhabitats.
Electricity – Exploring Circuits
Y6 have been building circuits and investigating how changing the components in the circuit affect their output.
Reception had a beautiful afternoon in the prayer garden today releasing our butterflies!
After watching them grow from tiny caterpillars into stunning butterflies, it was magical to set them free into the world. We talked about how God’s creation is full of wonder and how living things change and grow — just like us!
It was a lovely moment of reflection and learning, linking our science work on life cycles with our RE thinking about care, thankfulness, and new beginnings.
Freeing the Chilly Peas
Reception had a fantastic time exploring science through a fun and frosty experiment! The challenge was to rescue the chilly peas that were frozen in blocks of ice. The children were given a selection of tools and materials, including hammers, pipettes, salt, hot water, and tweezers, to help them free the peas.
Before getting started, we talked about how salt can help dissolve ice and make it melt faster. The children then used their problem-solving skills and worked together to test different methods. Some chose to drip hot water onto the ice with pipettes, while others carefully tapped it with hammers or sprinkled salt to speed up the melting process.
