In the Autumn term, Year 5 have been learning about the major rivers of the world
In the Autumn term, Year 5 have been learning about the major rivers of the world. As a class, we have been learning about the River Alt – the river which is local to our school in Huyton. On Tuesday 5th November 2024, we visited the Huyton Wetlands which is close to the source of the River Alt. We explored the Wetlands and made a number of observations and observational drawings before we returned to school.
On Wednesday 6th November, we visited the River Alt in three different locations: Knowsley Community College, Croxteth Country Park and Bludellsands Sailing Club in Hightown. At Knowsley Community College, the children tested the speed of the current of the River Alt by dropping pinecones from the bridge and measuring the speed of the flow of the river over a distance of two metres. We then travelled to Croxteth Country Park; where we repeated our pinecone investigation. We learned that the smaller pinecones drifted across the current of the river that the larger pinecones. The children analysed these results and concluded that the pinecones with the smallest surface area gave the best results.
After lunch, the children explored the woodland area of the park and went on a minibeast hunt before travelling to Hightown to observe where the River Alt flows into the River Mersey.
We all enjoyed the day.
