Spring Term in Year 6

English

We will be reading Island: A Story of the Galapagos by Jason Chin and Jemmy Button by Jenifer Uman and Valerio Vidali and learning to:

  • Use passive verbs
  • Variety of verb forms used correctly and consistently including the progressive and the present perfect forms
  • Use a wider range of devices to build cohesion
  • Use organisational and presentational devices to structure text
  • Use colons or dashes to mark boundaries between independent clauses

We will also be studying non-fiction texts about the human body and healthy lifestyles, and reading Thornhill by Pam Smy.

  • Imperial and metric measures

  • Area, perimeter and volume

  • Ratio and Proportion

We will be deepening our understanding of decimals and percentages; learning to use both metric and imperial measures, calculating area, perimeter and volume; and solving problems involving ratio and proportion.

Science

  • Living Things and their Habitats

  • Animals including Humans

We will be exploring how all living things can be classified based on their characteristics and learning about the achievements of scientist Carl Linnaeus. We will also be studying how water and nutrients are transported around the human body by learning about the functions of vital organs and the circulatory system.

We will be studying topics related to ‘Sources’, ‘Unity’, and ‘Death and New Life’.

Art & Design

Cityscapes

We will be studying the cityscapes of Charles Fazzino and Leonid Afremov and learning techniques relating to creating layers, textures and patterns when painting, and exploring the use of silhouettes and reflections in cityscape images.

Geography

Our Local Area

We will be learning about the physical and human geography of Huyton and undertaking local area fieldwork to develop our understanding of the local economy, land use and available services.

History

Crime and Punishment

We will be continuing our thematic study of crime and punishment across history and thinking about the key developments that have shaped our modern legal and criminal justice systems.

Computing

Online Safety Dilemmas

We will be working towards becoming online safety ambassadors by considering the best ways to respond to online safety dilemmas.

Music

Developing Melodic Phrases

We will be learning to create and develop melodic phrases in our composition and improvisation.

Design and Technology

Building Bridges

We will be developing our understanding of stabilising structures by exploring and constructing bridges.

Net and Wall Games

We will be developing our net and wall game skills by playing tennis and badminton.

P.S.H.E.

Living in the Wider World

We will be thinking about belonging to a community, considering issues related to media and digital literacy, and exploring the world of money and work.

Spanish

We will be expanding our Spanish vocabulary to include language relating to habitats and home, and continuing to develop our understanding of Spanish phonetics and pronunciation.
