Autumn Term in Year 5

Curriculum information

English

We will be reading Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburgh and learning to:

  • Use fronted adverbials
  • Plan writing by identifying audience and purpose
  • Organise paragraphs around a theme
  • Use commas to avoid ambiguity

We will also be reading stories based on real-life events, exploring newspapers and journalistic writing, exploring the poetry of Brian Moses, and reading Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo.

Maths

  • Place Value within 1,000,000

  • Addition and Subtraction

  • Graphs and Tables

  • Multiplication and Division

  • Area and Perimeter

We will be deepening our understanding of place value up to 1,000,000; securing our ability to calculate with the four operations, and learning more about graphs and tables, and area and perimeter.

Science

  • Living Things and their Habitats

  • Forces

We will be comparing the life cycles of different animals and learning about how plants and animals reproduce. We will also be learning to identify and explain forces including gravity, friction and air resistance.

We will be studying topics related to ‘Ourselves’, ‘Life Choices’, and ‘Hope’, and learning about Judaism.

Art & Design

Typography and Maps

We will be exploring how we can create typography through drawing and design, and use our skills to create personal and highly visual maps.

Geography

Investigating Rivers

We will be studying the features of rivers and researching rivers around the world. We will also be undertaking fieldwork to trace the River Alt from its source in Huyton all the way to the sea.

History

Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

We will learning about how Britain changed due to settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and investigating where their influence can still be found in the UK today.

Computing

AR Games

We will be designing and creating a game involving augmented reality.

Music

Classroom Jazz

We will be learning to perform jazz pieces on the glockenspiel whilst developing our understanding of musical theory and notation.

Design and Technology

Moving Toys

We will be learning more about mechanisms such as cams and followers by designing and making our own moving toys.

P.E.

Invasion Games

We will be developing our invasion games skills by playing football.

Relationships

We will be thinking about families and friendships, safe relationships, and respecting ourselves and other.

Spanish

  • Phonetics 1 to 3

  • Core Vocabulary

We will be expanding our core Spanish vocabulary and continuing to develop our understanding of Spanish phonetics and pronunciation.
