Spring Term in Year 5

Curriculum information


We will be reading Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd Stanton and learning to:

  • Use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely
  • Use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or an omitted relative pronoun
  • Link ideas across paragraphs using adverbials
  • Use commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity in writing

We will also be reading Norse myths, non-fiction texts about Norse gods and monsters, and reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

  • Fractions

  • Decimals and percentages

We will be deepening our understanding of multiplication and division; learning more about fractions and their relationship with decimals and percentages.


  • Earth and Space

  • Animals including Humans

We will be exploring the solar system to discover more about the Earth, sun and moon, and the achievements of scientist Katherine Johnson. We will also be learning about how humans change and develop as they grow older.


  • Local Church

  • Eucharist

  • Lent/Easter

We will be studying topics related to ‘Mission’, ‘Memorial Sacrifice’, and ‘Sacrifice’.

Art & Design

Making Monotypes

We will be combining the monotype process with painting and collage to make visual poetry zines and create still life inspired art work.


North America

We will be learning about the physical and human geography of the countries that make up the continent of North America and drawing comparisons with countries and regions in Europe.


Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

We will be continuing our study of the changes that took play across Anglo-Saxon and Viking Britain.



We will be to learning to create our own video blogs.


Key and Time Signatures

We will be exploring different key and time signatures and learning about how these shape pieces of music.

Design and Technology

Moving Toys

We will be continuing to learn about mechanisms such as cams and followers by designing and making our own moving toys.



We will be developing our gymnastics skills focusing on synchronisation and canon.


Living in the Wider World

We will be thinking about belonging to a community, considering issues related to media and digital literacy, and exploring the world of money and work.


  • Classroom Objects

We will be expanding our Spanish vocabulary to include language relating to the classroom, and continuing to develop our understanding of Spanish phonetics and pronunciation.
